“All the afflictions and all of the petch that aren’t written in the Torah” – גַּם כָּל חֳלִי וְכָל מַכָּה אֲשֶׁר לֹא כָתוּב בְּסֵפֶר הַתּוֹרָה – What does that mean?
There was once a king, and he had a high ranking official and a lowly servant, and they both broke the law. Both got punished, but the king said “treat the high ranking official with respect, make sure he doesn’t get humiliated.”
And then a few days go by, and the king hears how the high ranking official is bragging to that lowly servant “you see, I’m better then you.” And the king makes him get punished on the lowest level possible.
Said the holy Baal Shem Tov: There’s a מכה that’s כתובה בתורה – that’s when you learn the psukim of the Torah and you take musser upon yourself, and you chastise yourself. But that’s only as long as you’re not haughty, that’s only as long as you don’t brag and you think you’re better than anybody else, and you know Torah.
But when you do, you get a מכה אשר לא כתובה בתורה and you start suffering the way simple people do. Let’s always remember: We’re all the same, and if we have the gift of knowing Torah, it’s just a way of how we can become even more humble and connect to Hashem… Today.
