The holy Megaleh Amukos was Rav in Krakow, and one day he announced to the Roshei Kehillah that he’s out, he’s leaving town. They begged him to stay, but he wouldn’t listen. Mamesh a day before he was about to leave, he gathered all the Roshei Kehillah and said: I changed my mind, I’m here to stay. Now, I won’t tell you what caused me to leave, but I will tell you what changed my mind to stay. I had a game-changing Din Torah.
Here’s the story. One day a wealthy man rode by in his carriage and he thought he recognized a poor baker standing outside selling bagels, and he said: “Hey, aren’t you the son of so and so?” “Yes, I am”. So the rich man said “You? Selling Bagels!? But you’re a Talmid Chacham, why are you standing outside peddling? Let’s go for a Yissachar Zevulen deal, how much money do you need to earn? Go sit in Beis Medrash and we split!” They agree, handshake, he closes down his bakery, moves into Beis Medrash, and turns the Torah on high…
A few months go by, and suddenly the rich man sees that the bakery is running again. He goes to the baker and says “Hey? What’s happening? Didn’t we make a deal!?” Says the baker, “I don’t want the deal anymore, the deal is off.” “What do you mean the deal is off!? We made a deal!”
So the poor baker was summoned to me for a Din Torah, and I asked the baker “Why are you giving up this deal?” And do you know what he answered? “You know, when I was poor and I used to stand there in the bakery, my wife and I would connect to Hashem on every little thing. When we mixed that dough our hearts fluttered when we asked: “Hashem, please let it work, please let it rise, let the oven bake properly”, every time a customer came in we said, “Thank you, Thank you, Hashem!” And when there wasn’t a customer we prayed “Hashem, please, I need you in my life”. But now once I went into Beis Medrash and all my bills are covered, it’s true I’m learning all day, but I’m not connecting. I don’t need your money, I need a connection to Hashem!”
“And if there are such Jews in Krakow,” said the Megaleh Amukos “Then I’m here to stay.” 🔥

1. Do you think is it easier to connect to Hashem when you are lacking or when you have abundance? Why?
2. We live in a word of crazy shefa – how can we connect to Hashem even when we have gashmius galore?
3. Where in your life do you need the courage to walk away from a good deal so you have a better connection to Hashem?
