It just has to be the craziest thing ever: People would go to this Idol and they wouldn’t bring sacrifices, they would defecate on it. What type of avodeh zoreh is that? What is this baal pe’or?
The Chassidic masters said: You know once upon a time in the first generation of worshipers, they meditated and went up to heaven, and when they came down in their body – they were away for so long that sometimes it just happened that it came.
But the second third and fourth generation didn’t have those meditation techniques and they weren’t so spiritual, but they just remembered that here you take a dump. And that’s what they did, until they made a system out of it.
And that’s what happens whenever we begin with a spiritual intention but then we lose the mindfulness and the connection and the awareness and the kavana – it ends up being systematic and by rote, and it ends up being pretty smelly.
The holy Reb Tzadok said: מול בית פעור – You know where Moshe Rabbeinu was buried? Right across Pe’or. Moshe Rabbeinu said “I’m ‘Daas’, I need awereness. I need you to do things with intention, so that it doesn’t stink, so that the rituals we do can connect us to Hashem and be meaningful… Today.
