And so it was that the sheep wandered by the lion king, and the lion king stopped the sheep and said “Smell my breath – how does it smell?” And the sheep said “Why, horrid”. And the lion said “Horrid? That’s how you speak to a king?” And he devoured the sheep.
The next day a wolf came by, and the king stops that wolf and says “Hey, how does my breath smell? And the wolf says – “Oh king it smells wonderful”. And the king said “You’re lying! How dare you lie to the king?” And the king had a fine feast that day too.
And the fox observed what happened both to the sheep and the wolf, and the time came when he was in the path of the king and he was asked that same question “how does my breath smell?” Said the fox – “Oh my master the king, my nose is stuffed I can’t smell it.”
Says the holy Imrei Noam and Reb Elimeilech Biderman brings it down: Whenever you’re going to be confronted by machlokes, know that whether you say it stinks or you say this side is wonderful – you’re going to get devoured.
Keep your nose stuffed, don’t stick it where it doesn’t belong… Today.
