When all hail was about to break loose, the posuk tells us: הַיָּרֵא אֶת דְּבַר ה’ מֵעַבְדֵי פַּרְעֹה הֵנִיס אֶת עֲבָדָיו וְאֶת מִקְנֵהוּ אֶל הַבָּתִּים – ‘Some of Pharaoh’s subjects feared G-d’s word, and they made their slaves and livestock flee indoors.’ (Shemos 9:20)
But those who did not pay attention to G-d’s word left their slaves and livestock in the field.’ (9:21)
Asks the holy Imrei Emes: Why does it say וַאֲשֶׁר לֹא שָׂם לִבּוֹ – ‘those who didn’t pay attention’? Why doesn’t the posuk say ואשר לא ירא את דבר השם – ‘those who did not fear the word of Hashem’? Why are we switching terminologies?
There’s an unbelievable secret here: The true opposite of a ירא את דבר השם – is someone who doesn’t pay attention. לֹא שָׂם לִבּוֹ – He’s not aware, he’s on autopilot, robotic.
But the second that you tune in to the world, you become aware of the world around you and you notice how Hashem is communicating with you… Wow, you better believe you’re a ירא את דבר השם 🔥
